Re: Unity mode still unavailable for Ubuntu 12.04 x64 guests?

Trying to change your perception and give you feedback that this feature is important (to me)...

The only thing I use is a Linux guest (Ubuntu) in Unity mode. I use a web browser (Chrome), the terminal, and rdesktop. I use Unity mode so I can spread out across monitors and intermingle with OS X apps.

I used VMware Fusion 3 a few years back, but switched to Parallels 4 when OS X Lion came out - mostly because they had a great price to switch from Fusion to Parallels. And then I discovered how much better their Coherence view is over Fusion's Unity view (again, for Ubuntu).

I recently downloaded a trial of Fusion 5 and really wanted to switch back (away from Parallels) because I like Fusion's licensing terms better (install on multiple machines under your control). But your Unity view support running Ubuntu is just plain lousy.

Complaint #1: after a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 why is Unity view just disabled? I have to search myself and find discussions like this one... in Parallels when Coherence view doesn't work they provide a link to their site explaining what needs to be done.

And the solution presented here (in this thread) is incomplete or lacking (what if I don't want to change to KDE, how do I change to GNOME DE?)... I found a better solution elsewhere:

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

sudo apt-get install indicator-applet-appmenu

sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool

Complaint #2: Once in Unity view I can't even bring up Terminal. Terminal shows up in the OS X Dock and MenuBar, but no Terminal window ever appears. I can start Terminal in another view and switch to Unity and Terminal is visible, but the support from within Unity view is severly lacking.

VMware needs to take a page from Parallels Coherence view and show the task bar and launcher (not sure if these are the correct Ubuntu terms). Or just get Ubuntu Unity support working from Fusion's Unity view. There's nothing very unifying when Ubuntu Unity and Fusion Unity don't work together...

So, I'm back to using Parallels, for now...
