Repartitioning a drive usually means that there is no valuable data on the drives that you need to keep.
This means that it is way better - and you get a much faster vmdk- if you rebuild the vmdk from scratch.
Only if you use very large monolithicFlat vmdks - preallocated one piece - it would make sense to keep the file as it is.
For the partitioning you would then use a VM with a LiveCD or the directly the Installer of the next guest.
