Re: Is Anyone Happy with Fusion 5?

Now it's closer to three dozen.

I know you said you're eligible for the free upgrade however the following is not necessarily meant towards you or you alone.

I've been working in IT for over 20 years and if there is one thing I found out for sure it's not to gauge the quality of something until I've used it myself.  Granted there are lots of posts, more negative then positive, however users that aren't having issue usually don't come to the forums as more so its the ones with issues that do.

Now yes there have been some negative posts about VMware Fusion 5 (and every other version along the way too) and by no means am I trying to discount the gravity of the situation for those users however I look at it this way...  There are thousands if not tens of thousands of users that aren't or don't have any issues (outside of the published known issues) using VMware Fusion day in and day out and never come to these forums and post anything, good or bad.  So just because a handful of users have issues I'm not going to let it stop me from seeing for myself whether or not a given product is worth the price, both in time and money.

VMware provides a free 30-day trial serial number for a fully functioning test drive of the product so IMO anyone who doesn't first take advantage of the trial has no right to complain if purchased without doing so.  One needs to properly backup their system and user data before implementing new software so as to be able to easily revert back to a known good working previous state if/when necessary.  If one does this then they will have very little to loose except for some time and if one doesn't have the time to lose then one should continue with the status quo especially if all is working fine to begin with.

So, backup your Mac and make proper* backups of your Virtual Machines and then get the free 30-day trial serial number and download and install VMware Fuion 5.x (5.0.1 is the latest) and see for yourself whether or not it was a waste of your time and or money.

* It is a known fact that Time Machine is not 100% reliable backing up/restoring Virtual Machines under all circumstances/conditions.  Also backing up Virtual Machines via Time Machine is disk/time intensive and wastes a tremendous amount of space for something that may be corrupt and worthless come time to restore it.  At a minimum I would exclude Virtual Machines from Time Machine and with the Virtual Machines shutdown, not suspended, and VMware Fusion closed then manually copy the Virtual Machines Package(s) to an alternate location, preferably on to a different physical hard disk.  Then keep the User Data that is stored within the Virtual Machine backed up off of the Virtual Machine on a regular basis so as to always have a current User Data Backup.  If you have to restore a properly backed up Virtual Machine that is not as current at least you'll have a working Virtual Machine and current User Data to go forward with when you find out your Time Machine Backup of the Virtual Machine fails.
